On 29th January 1915, the 1st Cornwall Light Infantry battalion of 14th Brigade, 5th Division moved into trenches south-west of Messines where they remained until relieved on 1st February. The battalion diary entry for 30th January simply read, ‘Very quiet, nothing of importance to note’. It is doubtful if John Booker, who was killed on this day, would have agreed with this description, if able to do so.
